London Overground
Author: dwatry

I've visited London twice now in the last few months, and I had not been there for any length of time since 1980. There have been many changes in that interim period, most notably that services and frequencies have ramped up on all varieties of rail operations. And surprisingly to me, there is a whole new network of rail services in London overlaid on the London Underground network and on the mainline rail suburban network - known as the London Overground (LO) network. London Overground is a set of services using the mainline rail trackage, primarily at this stage forming a series of orbital routes around London. The basis for the London Overground was the old North London line and the East London line, supplemented by some new construction, some operation over lines that were previously freight-only, and some operation side-by-side with existing suburban services. LO services are operated by 4 or 5 car sets of EMU suburban stock similar to the stock used by the other suburban services, with both overhead and 3rd-rail current collection.

1) LO EB train approaching Camden Road station. Line diverging to the left is the freight connection to the West Coast Main Line (WCML) at Primrose hill.

2) LO WB train entering Camden Road Station.

3) LO train interior. Note full-width gangways.

4) LO trains at Highbury & Islington, which is a transfer point between several LO lines.

5) WB Freightliner train through Highbury & Islington.

6) Exterior of new LO station at Shoreditch High Street. This station is built on the site of the old Bishopsgate freight yard, and you can still see the viaduct walls and other evidence of the former yard on the site. They did minimal clearance for the new station - i think the expectation is that future development will come in ad surround the new station, and replace all the old RR infrastructure on the developer's dime.

7) LO train approaching Haggerston Station. This area required new construction to move the LO alignment off the old North London Railway alignment into Broad Street Station, and to meet up with the East London Railway alignment which would be used to traverse the Thames crossing and branch out south of the Thames.

8) LO train entering Finchley Road & Frognal Station.

Stricly speaking the connection heading left in picture 1 is to the West Coast Main Line, or in pre-Grouping terms the London and North Western Railway.

The Overground is one of the Great sucess stories of Modern london Railroading.
