The operation did have a Maurienne look to it.
The preserved steam locomotive near Modane is actually Italian, ex-FS 640 021, a 2-6-0. During construction of the motorway the original* French portal was moved a few hundred meters and reconstructed block-by-block. * The railway tunnel entry on the French side is not the original; I believe a slightly different entry path had to be constructed due to rock instability near the original entry.
