Trans Siberian Express Locomotive Question
Author: CNStratford

Just completed the Trans Siberian Express (Rossiya) from Moscow to Vladivostok in seven nights six days of non-stop riding. This locomotive type pulled us much of the way. Does anyone know the advantage of B-B-B wheel arrangement? Certainly not light track. Most freight trains passing us ran to 100 77 metric ton cars.

As I understand it, the B-B-B arrangement is preferred over two simple 3-axle trucks, as it more suitable for routes with many sharp curves as it generates smaller lateral forces on the wheels. For this reason it has been widely used in Italy, but may be less common now (as are six-axle designs generally) as more power is available from straight Bo-Bos.

They were common in Switzerland in 2005. Gerry

Worth pointing out that all the Eurotunnel locomotives used on the shuttles are B-B-B

Again, that was to accommodate very tight track curvature.

The center pin for the middle truck(bogie) has some amount of transverse movement.
