What are they hauling in the enclosed freight cars?

The freight train hauled by two Class 151 Co-Co electric locomotives is a unit train of coal hoppers. They are UIC Type "Falns"  and are designedd to dump outside the rails rather than between the rails like North American cross hoppers. The have two large doors on each side  and carry the load like saddle bags across the center sill. It is a very common design in Western and Central Europe.

I also commend your photography.  Always interesting to watch.  Never saw two ICE trains coupled together before.  Dave, did you see any double stacked containers or does the catenary present clearance issues?

Loading gauge more generally prevents double stack. Even without overhead wires the top container would hit over bridges and tunnels.
