Article on Ukraine Railways during the Russian Invasion
Author: RuleG

According to this Bloomberg CityLab article, during the peak of the evacuation in early March, 190,000 rail passengers per day traveled west in free evacuation trains.  The article notes that the Ukrainian Railways, with 250,000 workers before the war, was one of Ukraine's largest employers.  At least 40 railway employees have been killed during the war.

The article also has this remarkable passage:

=20pxThis suggestion that railway workers are actively hindering the Russian advance came one week after the Polish, Czech and Slovenian prime ministers all chose to travel by train to Kyiv for talks with President Zelenskiy=20px, a reflection of their confidence in the network’s safety.

Heroic work indeed. How many would have been able to flee without the help of Ukrainian Railways.  Once again the value of a valid passenger service is in evidence. Something we sadly no longer have here.
