It is one of nine locomotives preserved from the class of 30. Built by British Railways in 1950, and withdrawn from service in 1965 before being moved to Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, South Wales. Since 2004 it has been owned by the West Somerset Railway and based there since 1995.
Of the 297 British Railways steam locomotives sent to the Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, South Wales, 213 were rescued for the developing railway preservation movement in the 1960s and 70s. When the railways were nationalised all four companies had orders or plans for new locomotives. As BR had yet to develop their own standard designs the Railway Executive simply signed off the previous administrations plans.
