Sometime in the coming years, if Ukraine survives, I wonder if they will change their track gauge to 1435mm.
As the Russians blew up their connecting bridges anyway changing their system to work with the EU  would be a attraction.

"If Ukraine survives?"  They are winning albeit it at a very high cost. And the railways have been heroic. The question now is will  Putin survive?  

The Soviet Union was severely damaged by the long, grinding war of attrition in Afghanistan, as the US and its ally Osama bin Laden fought them through the proxy war. Leading to the erosion of that country a few years later.

It looks like Ukraine and its ally NATO / US are fighting the same grinding war of attrition against Russia. Blowing the turrets off a thousand Russian tanks and sinking Russian warships can't be well received in the Kremlin. And the folks marching in the Victory Day celebration know that they're next.

But Putin and his system have managed to bull shit about 70% of the populace in rallying against Ukraine and NATO. But was it Lincoln that said, "You can fool most of the people most of the time but not all of the people all of the time"?

...And Russia will not accept from Ukraine refrigerated railcars laden with the corpses of slain Russian soldiers.
That would result in really bad optics when they arrive back in Mother Russia.

The Ukrainians said they would release the list of killed in action Russian soldiers and mercenaries. Name, rank, serial numbers.

Even with an Iron Curtain, that info would circulate inside Russia within hours.
