(The trespasser had an), "unsteady gait about him". Pretty good, no, excellent, job of reporting this almost funny incident...and one wonders if MacBeau had written the crew's report...!

I caught that nuance, too. It's a very good way of saying he appeared to be drunk (or stoned) without risking a libel suit if he wasn't actually drunk (or stoned).
