Eastern Railroad Discussion > hump yards that have two humps?Date: 04/28/09 13:21 hump yards that have two humps? Author: csxengineer anyone know besides willard, which hump yards have more than one hump?
Date: 04/28/09 13:24 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: toledopatch Conway does, although I believe one of them was taken out of service after NS reopened Enola.
I'd be surprised if UP's Bailey Yard in North Platte NE doesn't have two humps. Date: 04/28/09 13:40 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: mkostecky Enola had 2 humps too. Then Conrail closed them both then reopened one after only a few months when they found out that they really did need one in Enola after all.
Date: 04/28/09 13:42 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: DanThorne Bailey Yard does have two humps. Allentown did back in the day.

However after the mergers it was closed and moved to what is now CSX's Queensqate yard in Cincinnati.

Date: 04/28/09 14:43 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: skrambo Brunswick MD had 2 humps (west yard - east yard)
Also did flat switching in Valley Yard. Date: 04/28/09 15:08 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: hoydie17 Pretty sure Selkirk still has two humps.
Date: 04/28/09 15:36 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: DanThorne Selkirk only had one hump last week with very little going over it. I don't know if it may have had more than one in the past.
DT Date: 04/28/09 16:01 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: NebraskaZephyr The CB&Q had a double hump at Galesburg, IL. If I remember correctly it was two 40-track humps. In the 1980s the BN rebuilt it into a single hump with 64 tracks.
NZ Date: 04/28/09 16:14 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: tp117 Cumberland used to have 2 humps, so did Pot yard. Clearing in Chicago has two humps still. I think old Northumberland had 2 humps; if you go way back into history when the railroads hauled virtually everything and it all was loose carload traffic, and many were rider humps, the list will grow. Yje original Selkirk may have had 2 humps; takes some research.

Alton & Southern railway in East St Louis/Alorton, Ill ( close to St Louis ) still has a double hump in daily use at there Gateway yard . It is normally worked by pairs of Union Pacific SD40-2's and can be easliy photographed from public property in the morning. Mark Mautner Date: 04/28/09 18:35 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: pennsy3750 East Altoona once had two humps. They went away around the same time as the full-circle roundhouse, although you can still see the remains of both humps (and the roundhouse) if you know where to look.
Date: 04/28/09 18:48 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: B36-7 Waycross, Ga. had a doubletrack hump back in 2002 when I got a tour of the yard. Don't know if they still use it or not.
Date: 04/29/09 05:16 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: CGTower Russell Kentucky at one time had two humps. Fitzpatrick for manifest and the coal hump...the manifest hump was removed and abandoned when all classification was moved to Cincy...
The coal hump, I believe, is still in service. CG Tower Date: 04/29/09 05:37 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: Gonut1 Alton Yard near St. Louis has a twin hump.

Add one more to Altoona for a total of three humps. WJ "Homer", Scales, and WN East Altoona. 10 yards, about 9000 car capcity in 1929. Date: 04/29/09 07:54 Re: hump yards that have two humps? Author: rresor Double humps (one for each direction of traffic) were once quite common. When I worked in IC's Markham Yard in 1974, it had two humps and a total of six yards -- two arrival, two departure, and two hump bowls. It's now been rebuilt as an intermodal terminal.
Santa Fe's Argentine Yard was also built as a double hump in the 1960s. Following the BNSF merger, classification work was supposed to be switched to the ex-BN Murray Yard and Argentine was rebuilt as an intermodal terminal. However, Murray turned out not to be large enough, so one hump and bowl tracks were put back in classification service at Argentine. Date: 04/29/09 13:18 Re: hump yards that have two humps?
