Nice shots - They could change all their locomotive-type things to that color and I wouldn't mind it one bit! And it would have historic significance as way back in the late 1950's under PRR control some locomotives were painted tuscan, but with yellow lettering... === === = === JLH

I don't think PRR control of N&W had anything to do with painting their passenger GP9s red with gold lettering. They did that to match the passenger equipment.

What does the second "locomotive" do? I think that would also be a real nice NS scheme or tuscan red.

NS Research 34 is a track test unit. It carries track sensors and computer equipment used to monitor track conditions and locate problem areas.

There's gota be a nickname for that ugly thing. Come on, RRdr's are famouus for coming up with some punchy nicknames! It almost looks like it should waddle behind momma duck.

NS 34 had extensive modifications done, including the addition of the cab, and was released from the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA, in August of 2008.

A second Research test unit, NS 38, was rebuilt from a former NS EMD SD40 and released from Juniata in September 2009. It has a larger cab (actually two EMD cabs combined into one) and is nicknamed "The Brick".

Is there any specific reason for the huge notch behind the cab? Seems it would be much simpler to just carry the high hood straight across the unit.

NS 34 was rebuilt into a track test unit from a slug unit, which had the entire carbody at that lower height. When rebuilt, the carbody was only extended upward where necessary.

The carbody of the newer NS 38 is of uniform height from front to back.
