These ES44AH's and the previous CW44AH upgrades are the best thing to happen to CSX in a long time. If that company could ever do one thing right it was this power

Why is that?

Nice, new GEVOs. Now, if only they would order up some new SD70ACe's.

Great photos.

I don't see CSX buying new EMDs anytime soon and I don't blame them. Ride in some of these new GEs and you'll see why.

I hope not. Keep those junk EMDs off the roster.

Look at msp1985's comment and thats part of it. The other is that CSX took the time to spec out a special heavy duty locomotive. These are so well suited to CSX's territory and operations and they are a perfect fit and excel in their duty's. People wonder why CSX recently got rid of 15 SD70MAC's, well because these units made them obsolete overnight. They are absolute pulling brutes, have great dyno's, they're quiet unlike those junk ACe's another un-informed fan wants and trust me I was just like him before I started working on the railroad several years back. At the time I thought the SD90 series was the coolest thing on the rails, then I had to come back to reality when I was around them every day and loathed them and realized the huge gains GE has made and totally eclipsed the current EMD product. A few times people have asked if the ACe's out of Muncie are any better, really that question cant be answered until CAT sinks some serious R&D money into EMD to correct the problems.

I really can't speak to the improvement of the ACe's. I do know NS's are heavier and they hold the rail better, always a plus. That has been EMD's issue for years IMHO.

Unfortunately CSX is beginning tests on the SD70MAC out of Corbin. EMDX 1204/1205 are already there, and EMDX 1202/1203 are enroute. They are going to test on the Stilesboro trains. (They operate Corbin to Stileboro, GA).

No,no,no on the MAC or ACE junk, myself and fellow hogs where I work out of hate those damn things! The MAC's are useless at holding the rail and unreliable, the ACE's while better performers have terrible cabs, second only to the 4000 rebuilds.

And going back to the original topic, the only thing in my opinion the new CSX GEs are missing is the BNSF/UP style handrails. Would those really be the expensive if an upgrade?

Thats what I'd like to see and run and test for myself Shadetree. I agree with you on the weight and NS has some sort of high adhesion software in those similar to what's in CSX's and NS's ES44AC's. The stock ACe's I've run- CSX, UP, BNSF, KCS and MRL units just don't make the cut as far as I'm concerned.

I've never really noticed till you said something. Even the CP opted for the more " ergo " handrails. Now that I'm aware and curious, I must test both styles next time I happen to catch a foreign motor in AZ.
