EMD's model F125
Author: gouldj

Inside cover of the current Railway Age magazine has an artist's rendering of EMD's new passenger unit, the F125. It is a nice full page ad featuring the unit with a 4700hp tier 4 Cat engine.

There hasn't been an aesthetically pleasing passenger locomotive built since the F40PH ....... and I remember those being criticised for "looks" as well .....

EMD must have hired a former GE designer for that one.

I wouldn't go by that image much. I am sure a lot of the details will change. Still, looking at the overall shape, it is a lot better than some other recent passenger concepts I have seen. Looks like EMD is trying to give it a semblance of a nose. The proportions seem good. I think the detailing will end up making or breaking this one for me.

I guess 125 must be for the top speed?

Whatever happened to the concept of industrial design? Why does EVERTTHING have to be all function, and no form?

Substitute "E9" for "F40PH".

It's reminiscent of the HST Class 43 locos that have been running in the UK since the early 1970's. They've been operating at 125 MPH since the early 1970's too.

Or substitute "SDP40F/F40C" for "F40PH".

Wonder how long those shrouds on the bottom would last, they haven't lasted in the past, removed for ease of maintenance. === === = === JLH

It's interesting that both builders' web sites really only feature one model for American freight railroading. It's certainly not like other transportation sales outfits where one could find numerous models and variations of trucks, etc
