Chicago-MILW question
Author: NYC6001

What route did Milwaukee Road use through the Chicago area to get to its Southern Indiana line? Specifically, what towns, interlockers, shared track, etc. And how much is in use today? TIA

I don't know the entire story; but I do know that CMSTP&P owned 50% of the IHB (NYC owned the other 50%). So I believed it used that to get around Chicago. Gerry

Farther south, the ex-MILW is operated by the Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern between Iroquois Junction and Danville, IL. It's abandoned north and south of those points, with Indiana Rail Road (INRD) operation starting in the Terre Haute area and continuing south.

From Bensenville Yard, Milw trains headed south (tt east) on IHB/BOCT to BOCT's Chicago Hgts sub just west of Barr Yard near Riverdale, IL. There, they headed south thru Harvey, Glenwood, etc. to Chi Hgts. At that point ownership changed from BOCT to MILW.

Nowadays, the Chi Hgts sub extends only to a point just north of Glenwood. From there south to about a mile north of Iroquois Jct, IL (near the town of Donovan), the line is gone. From Iroquois to a point just north of Danville, it still exists and is operated by the Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern shortline.

No, the change in ownership was in Chicago Heights, a little south of Joe Orr Road. IIRC, there wasn't any thing that showed where Milwaukee ownership actually started.
