What causes this whine ?
Author: biff

Over the years I've seen plenty of EMD units that had a high pitch whine as they passed by, this train seemed to be louder than normal. Thinking about it , I really don't know the exact cause of it. What causes this whine and why are some louder than others ? This was NS 310, climbing Attica(NY) hill and again a little further east of Attica on Friday July 11th.

sounds like a screaming SD-60 turbocharger to me. Maybe the 70M also.

If the rotor of a turbocharger get's "nicked" or "scarred" for any reason......It will whine at approximately the hertz of its rotation.

He mentioned that the train was climbing a hill....The SD60 and 70 series do not have that old dynamic brake fan whine that the SD40's had....they have more of a roaring sound on the 60's and 70's when in dynamic from the fans....Dave W

dynamics and traction motors are not the sound you are hearing. It is 110% a turbocharger get ready to go

Do they ever pull their fair share of the load. If they are leading, they are being pushed and if trailing, they are being pulled, GE's, AKA, GE Junkers!

At track speed they are great, I prefer their comfort over an EMD any day of the week, but you are right as a leader they load slow and get pushed as a trailer being pulled, EMD and GE both have their benefits and disadvantages

Its called a "Howler" The Fins on the Turbo's fans are getting worn and the turbo is about to fail!!
The next thing that will happen if its not replaced is clouds of thick black smoke out of the stack because the turbo cannot produce enough boost (Fresh air pushed into the cylinders under pressure) to burn all the fuel injected into the cylinders. This is called "Over Fueling"

GE's will out pull any EMD any day. And yes, that noise sounds like the turbo is kinda wacked out.

The train is also going by at a constant speed, + another 1 to the turbo being on it's way out.

Not so, it was the train and I could hear the loud whine long before I could see the train and the camera was not turned on yet. That was at both locations, and those two locations are over five miles apart.

I've heard that out of an ACe when the ODOWP/OWPDO had a trio of ACes awhile back. It's definitely not camera related.

Sounds to me like a pair of EMD Turbochargers wound all the way up, with the throttle in Notch 8!

A beautiful railroad sound if you ask me!
