What's left of the U Boats nowadays?
Author: ns2557

After shooting and chattin with some friends about the 2 U23B's that I managed to capture on electronic media (Wish it were film), I got into a discussion of what is left of the GE UBoat units that are still Active. Mind you, I am interested in Active Units only. Has anyone produced a List somewhere? TIA. Ben

Go to KEH.com , look for film cameras that you can use your lenses on, buy some Ilford b&w film and you are good to go.

There are some active units (not sure of exact U Boat model) on the Georgia Central line. However, I have learned recently per another local railfan that those will be getting retired very soon.

Pickens in South Carolina rosters what I believe may be the ONLY active fleet of baby boats - former SCL U18Bs.

They are, from a friend who is familiar with the line, now out of service, no longer being used. Thanks tho, for the info. Ben

From someone older, it's hard to imagine that a U25B would make a good museum piece as I remember in service on PC and the Family lines. It's all relative. I also remember some former Wabash ones on the N&W, not to mention the high hood later models. My how time flies.

Georgia Central railroad has about 10 high hood U23B's of Southern Railway heritage and one U23B of SCL heritage. Genesse & Wyoming Inc. owns GC and is scrapping most of them and selling a couple to Mexico and replacing them with worn out GP16's, GP20's and MP15's. If you want shots of these U boats pulling freight and intermodal at 40mph you better plan a trip very soon as they will be gone by the end of summer. I'm making a trip there on Friday actually.

I wholeheartedly agree with ya. I recall the PC U25B's in particular along with all the ohter U Boats PC had. Was very fond of the U25C's and always looked for the 5 ex PRR U30C's that roamed the RR back then. Didn't see many of these, the U30C's, but managed a few shots here and there when I did and had a camera with me. Ben

The SOU U23Bs with AAR-B trucks were delivered 1972-74; the SOU U23Bs with FB-2 trucks were delivered 1975-77, and then the B23-7s came out. Per http://www.nsdash9.com/atroster.html, NS got rid of the ex-SOU U23Bs in 1996 and got rid of the ex-SOU B23-7s in 2001. The ex-CR B23-7s lasted two years more.

Any idea what kind of runs they make on Saturday?

But that still means CR 2789-2798 were the last UBoats built by GE/Erie. The CR 2794 would be one of the very last ones built. To P&W 2207 then NYSW 2304. Ben

Have two right here in my area (Cleveland, Ohio). A former Lehigh Valley U23B works the Shelly yard close to NS Rockport yard in Cleveland. Another one works the dumper at Twinsburg, Ohio, another Shelly Materials stone yard. It's an ex PC unit. The ex LV unit has been having a few problems lately, the ex PC unit is a remote and is a bit tough to get on film/pixels.

They don't normally run on weekends unfortunately. I'd be making a lot more trips there!

That is a really nice shot of the ex Lehigh Valley U-boat, a.k.a U23B.

A person higher up in this thread said the Georgia Central U23Bs have already been stored....

If that's the case, they stored them within the last week and a half as djy has a video of 4 of them from his trip on 7/18/14 on his YouTube channel.

Although the Georgia Central is getting rid of their U-boats, I hear the Pickens are actually doing some work on their U18Bs to prolong their service life. I was recently up and caught the two trains meeting in Gluck with two U18bs on each train!

They all have not been stored yet. A couple are in place to be scrapped but they are still running as of this post.
