Delaware Lackawanna Question
Author: melalbert

Caught this brief Delaware and Lackawanna consist departing Scranton, Pa. on Saturday, 9/27/14, while waiting for a collegiate tennis match along the tracks at the university there. Two questions: why five locomotives for a six-car freight (I hope they were picking up more cars along the line) and what are the contents and destination of these Canadian government covered hoppers? The lead locomotive was 3643 Delaware and Lackawanna MLW M626, but on the others I was only able to get engine numbers: 3642 Delaware and Lackawanna; 2453 Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern; 405 Delaware and Lackawanna; and 2045 Genesee Valley.

A five model Alco/Mlw consist, not bad at all.

A lot most likely's here. The Canadian hoppers are most likely grain going to the mill at Mt.Pocono. Five engines on a short train most likely means they have a good deal of interchange coming from NS in Slateford Jct. including, most likely a bunch of heavy frac sand hoppers.

Holy cow! Just watched the video after my post. 5 ALCO's in matching paint! Sweet.

The train (spg27) picked up an additional 38 loads at Cobb's siding, about 8 miles east of Scranton. The hoppers carry wheat for Ardent Mills at Mt. Pocono, Pa.

On occasion, they will store loads of grain for the mill there, when there's no room for them in Scranton.

There's also a lot of steep grades and curvature between Scranton and Slateford Jct.
