Waycross 2014
Author: judahrice

On my trip to Folkston, we also took a short day trip to Waycross. Rice Yard security of course is strict, but we ended up with some other great photos.

1) At NRE a Geep and a former IC SW sit, looking abandoned (at least the SW)

2) Yup! You've seen 'em over and over again: Two ex-CSX GEs, a CF7, An ex-UP GP38-2, and an IC/ICG Paducah rebuild, lay in the weeds, watching the shadows.

3) Ok. Coming from Austin, Texas, we have some weird things, but have no "Corridor Z."

4) also at NRE, i got this pic of another SW (i'm bad at identifying switchers--- i can spot an SW1500, and maybe a couple others like SW10)

5) On our way back to Folkston, we pulled over to take some pictures at a junkyard. This Ford seriously is Found On Road Dead! never to be driven again!

6) A Chevrolet Oldsmobile from some time ago rusts away in the weeds

7) We stopped to snap some pics of a few goats next to an extremely large waterside.

8) CSX Rock train, pulled by an ES44AC, and an CW44AC (AC4400)

That about wraps it up. Stay tuned for more from Folkston.

All images taken with a 2014 Canon 70D, with it's stock lens.

All but the first two images were edited in Adobeā„¢ Lightroom

See you down the tracks.

Looks like business at NRE is off?
Interesting American Picker shots. But the Ford has a Volvo grille and badge and the chrome-striped rusting Chevy is I believe an Oldsmobile?
And that ain't no green goat!

Corridor Z a/k/a GA 520, much of which is multiplexed with a widened US 82. Didn't make the cut as part of the Appalachian Development Highway System, which designated Corridors A through X. Georgia added Z on its own initiative to improve highway connectivity between Memphis and the port at Brunswick. Corridor Z included bypass work and highway realignment in Waycross to reduce bottlenecks through the city. The new I-22 between Memphis and Birmingham (Corridor X) and an extensively improved US 280 between Birmingham and Columbus are other parts of the initiative.

Competes with CSX and NS, in a way.

Yes, I was very impressed with that state of the art (sarcasm here as it doesn't exist currently, actually is a very rutted, narrow, two lane road) interchange between I-22 and I-65 in Birmingham two years ago and this past summer. Otherwise, I-22 was a pleasant surprise thru beautiful country in the NW part of Alabama on our way to visit Ole Miss and Oklahoma City for softball tourney.

Corridor Z added a nice 4-lane highway to south Georgia. I remember years ago while ridding along that highway purchasing from a roadside farmer the largest watermelon I have ever seen. We had a relatively new Pontiac Grand Am and the watermelon took up half the back seat.

I knew it was to provide better transportation in that part of the state but never knew how it fit in to the plan to provide a corridor to Birmingham and ultimately Memphis.

Most recent forecast I've seen is October 2015. YMMV.

Yep...that is a Volvo...but that model of Volvo always looked to me like a small version of a '47 or '48 Ford car...Dave W
