NS Washington District....."Route of the Vulcans"
Author: mp208

Recent posts have detailed the "Rockrunners".........or "Vulcans", that haul the aggregates on Norfolk Southern's lines in northern Virginia.  Like a continuous conveyor belt the trains feed a distribution center in Alexandria, VA.  On 4-16-15 we find ourselves trackside near Catlett, VA as the "Vulcans" do their thing.
Photo 1: P-63 eastbound on the branch approaches the main line at Calverton, VA
Photo 2  Post Office at Casanova, VA. The USPS will soon conduct an experimental delivery service from this tiny facility using gyrocopters ..
Video scene 1:  Soutrhbound manifest 35Q leads the parade
Video scene 2:  Northbound "Vulcan" (P-56) brings loads from Casanova, VA to Alexandria.
Video scene 3   Southbound "Vulcan" (P-63) hustles empties back to the Casanova quarry.

Vulcan was founded in Alabama in 1909 as the Birmingham Slag Company, so they've been a Southern/NS customer for over 100 years. My mother worked for Vulcan in the early 1950s.
