Tank Car Full Head End Shields
Author: NKP715

SFLX 23006 was in an EB NS train at Cresson, PA on 4/28.
Had never seen (or at least noticed) a car with this design of end shield
before.  The DOT SP15284 spec requires a 1/2" full head end shield,
in addition to the 112 spec requirements.  Reading the hazmat placards
certainly provides the reason.

Are there many cars with this configuration ?

Searched several data bases for the SFLX reporting marks with no results.

The AAR Railroad Reporting Mark Index Page found at http://www.pwrr.org/rrm/ lists SLFX as Southern Freight Logistics, Inc.

I like the idea of painting a highly visible band on the car. Makes it easier to determine if you're facing an inhalation risk, or a fire risk, or an explosive risk, etc.

yes.  Is there any code in effect for this purpose?  For a car designed to handle only a specific commodity, it would be a great idea.
