Nice job !

But not enough flowers !

What always impressed me about reading of the train was the huge amount of flowers.

You know why there was so many flowers don't you?

Well, a wild guess might be odor control.
The whole account of the journey and stops is very interesting. Day and night.

Right...I've read accounts they had local undertakers check the condition of the body periodically at stops on the journey. It was a real test of embalming techniques of the day. Lots of people dont realize there were actually two bodies on the train...the President's and his son who had died a couple of years prior.

Indeed, and I had forgotten about Willie being on board.

I have read about the undertakers having to keep the body presentable, quite a task and accomplishment as were the whole logistics of the train itself.

What I find interesting is reading accounts in small town newspapers along the train route. I lived for several years in Richmond, Indiana and learned the train passed through town about 2 am and the whole town came out and lined the tracks. Church bells were rung throughout town to signal the approaching train and wake people up and alert them. These accounts also created a large problem for those building the funeral car. Depending on what time of day and lighting conditions different accounts had the car being different colors.

Regarding color, that is another thing I was noting like you. Various accounts described it differently. What also seems to be a common thread in those days is any desciption of color as related to depot buildings or railroad equipment. They seem to be very vague and go more into the character of the structure, the finish, the type of wood, craftsmanship and then end with it being painted or finished "in a pleasing color".

I am glad that this car came out as well as it did. I think that the biggest surprise was the red wheels. I may well have read that but foregotten, but then again not sure anything would have prepared me for that contrast of red and brown.

Oh and the biggest thing looking at the photos with the coffin is no military guard. - not being critical really .... just an observation of how strange after seeing so many drawings and photos and accounts etc. I always equate it with military guard and tons of flowers.

Spectacular work!  I hope to be able to see it when it comes through my neck of the woods.
About those red wheels, I wonder if this was done back in the day so that they could see if there were any developing cracks in the wheels-those cracks being of a substantially different color than the surrounding red paint.,  I think the Chineese Railways used red paint on the wheels of their steam engines for this reason (That and it kind of became a trademark of those locos).

Agree, well done Tom!!

Regarding the color of the car...

In my interview with David Kloke, he revealed that the car color was determined by analyzing paint chips from a window that survived from the original car.

Thanks for posting the photos.  Many of us will not have the opportunity to see it.  Your photos are great.

Someone mentioned seeing it in action.  I think I read that it is transported by truck.  Take a look at the makeshift rails under it.  Looks like two strips of iron laid there to keep the flanges from digging into the asphalt.
