Status of ST. MARY'S RR -- Georgia???
Author: rbx551985

In reviewing previous rail news threads, I ran across the TO.com thread http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?f=2&i=93004&t=93004 and was wondering if anyone from that area had any more updates on the current status on the St. Mary\'s RR (SM). Does it still operate, and if so, who\'s in charge of everything? If they\'re no longer operating, who gets any assets -- cars, locomotives, track, etc. I see a LOT of their red-painted boxcars still roaming CSX rails through Virginia with ordinary SM reporting marks, and was wondering.

And finally, are there plans to tear out the RR line? I hope to God they don\'t go that far, but what\'s up with SM?

The Pocket List of Railroad Officials shows they operate 11-miles of track.

When I was there in early November the plant was shut down and nothing was running. There was an engine outside that had not moved in years, one inside and a WAMX lessor outside. They were a lot of box and pulpwood cars stored.AFAIK they are gone.

It may still operate on a limited basis. The navy has a base at st. mary\'s that still requires service, and i do not know if the Kingsland switcher goes over there.

SM is still operating with three active employees. In addition to the sub base, SM has a couple other customers; one is a Georgia Pacific plant that ships/receives ~30 cars a week.
