Fourth of July Railfanning Adventure
Author: fatnrat

Hope everyone had a good 4th. On 4th of July Saturday, I made a railfan outing starting in the Columbus area. Then headed north to Marion to catch some more action and then ended the day at Greenwich. Hope you all enjoy!

#1.  In the nice morning light, NS autorack train 272 heads south, or railroad east, over Cooke Rd. on the north side of Columbus, OH. The single track CSX Columbus Line Sub (ex-NYC) can be seen in the background. The two lines here are oriented geographically opposite to one another, meaning a CSX train running in the same direction as 272 would be considered a westbound.

#2.  Soon after 272 has passed, CSX train X115-02 of baretables heads north (RR east) at Cooke Rd. with ES44AC 3086 leading C40-8 7636. Not often do you get to see a train on the CSX line here as this track is little used, so I was lucky to see this one.

#3.  X115 splitting the NYC signals at QE 132. The train will soon come to a stop at the diamond in Worthington to wait for NS 17M to clear before continuing east towards Galion.

#4.  A train race is taking place at Cooke Rd. as NS 17M approaches on the left with X115 on the right.

#5.  7-unit lashup on 17M with two Dash-9s leading two UP ES44ACs, an ex-CR SD60I and two more Dash-9s.

#6.  UP ES44ACs 8048 and 8231 as the 3rd and 4th units on 17M.

#7.  Going away shot of the 7-unit lashup approaching the signals just north of the crossing. It will soon cross over the CSX line at Worthington.

#8.  Last train at Cooke Rd. before heading for Marion is NS 188 with two typical Dash-9s for power.

#9.  After a slow start, my first train at Marion is NS 235 headed west about to cross the CSX Mt. Victory Sub or former CR Indianapolis Line in front of the preserved AC Tower from which the photo was taken.

#10.  NS 116 headed west on the Sandusky District paralleling the CSX Columbus Sub (ex-C&O) towards Center St. crossing.

#11.  CSX coal train T912-30 comes into view on the C&O main with NS 116 in the background creating my second train race of the day. The CSX train headed north here is also considered a westbound like NS.

#12.  CSX Q363 westbound on the Mt. Victory Sub crossing the NS main at CP 101.

#13.  NS 376 heads west approaching the CSX diamonds with four GE widecabs for power.

#14.  After 376 has passed, NS 234 comes eastbound with a UP SD70M and SD70ACe leading an NS SD60E.

#15.  My last train at Marion is CSX empty coal train E492 on the Columbus Sub crossing the Mt. Victory Sub. It's weird that this train looks identical to the earlier T912 in that it has ES44ACs each in the YN3 and YN3b schemes and the same coal hoppers.

#16.  Last stop for the day is Greenwich, OH, where I find a very long CSX Q264 heading east around the northwest wye from the Willard Terminal Sub onto the Greenwich Sub towards Cleveland in the evening light.

#17.  My catch for the day. After Q264 has cleared, a westbound W&LE freight, most likely 237, running as Z577 while on CSX trackage, heads into the connection onto the B&O main towards Willard. Two SD40-2s, one an ex-KCS unit and the other in the attractive orange and black scheme, provide the power. The train got onto the Greenwich Sub main at New London.

#18.  Going away shot of Z577 on the double track wye at CP-54, or BOYD. An unusual catch for me as I rarely get to see any W&LE stuff.

Have a good week everyone.
