Erie heritage unit train ID?
Author: Appalachianrails

What's the ID of the train the Erie heritage unit is currently assigned to? Someone reported it on heritageunits leading an eastbound through Matewan, WV this morning but didn't even say what kind of train it was.

Well that's a first, an incomplete or inaccurate description of a train on heritageunits. Never thought Id see that.

As long as the basic info is correct, it's better than not to know where it is and which way it's headed. Not everybody has access to symbol information, especially on NS if they're not monitoring a radio.

But yes, without a symbol, it's certainly not harmful to provide a brief train description (coal train, autoracks, doublestack, etc.) in the Notes. In this case, it's probably on a coal train, because otherwise there would probably be more spots of it from Ohio.

The person who reported it at Matewan said he or she saw it in person. Even if they didn't have a radio/scanner, telling what type of train it is (power move, coal, grain, manifest, intermodal, etc) can be helpful because it could somewhat indicate what its future movements could possibly be. Given the area where it was reported, it could have been possibly assigned to helper service out of Bluefield now.

Extra section of a loaded coal train sounds like; extra section of NS 744. Thanks there Slipperywhenwet...

A sighting without information is better than no sighting report at all.

Q44 would be coal loads for Plant Marshall in NC, if the report is correct.

The ERIE is sitting in the fuel rack in Asheville NC after coming in this morning on Q44 (744). May go out tonight or possibly tomorrow am. There is already a train at the plant that departed Asheville last night and another
744 departed Asheville this morning.  It is next in line, but when??  It will be at least tonight as there are still heat restrictions in place going down the mountain to Old Fort when it's above 80 degrees.  Won't have to worry about that too much longer.

744 with the ERIE still leading departed Asheville early this morning only to go about 10 miles and sit and sit and sit and then finally go but not too far. (They aren't going to make it!) They made it to Grovestone (First siding east of Asheville) where they stopped and held the main because 162 in front of them stalled at Ridgecrest because they lost power on one of their units . 162 almost made it to the top but didn't.  744's pushers were going to drop off and run around 744 and go give them a push the rest of the way to the top and then they could have gone on down the mountain to Old Fort - that didn't happen. 162 had a string of TTX single level racks on the rear and it was feared that they would derail them with the force of the pushers.  Regroup again!  In the mean time 744 is still sitting at Grovestone blocking not one but TWO main crossings into the Ingles Supermarket Distribution Center - (no one is happy at this point}.  162 is also blocking three crossings near Ridgecrest.  The higher ups finally decided to break 744 at the main truck crossing and then run up and rescue 162.  The E28 pushers from 744 drug 162 back through Grovestone, dropped their power (162) and then drug 162 back to Asheville.  Then after some more sorting around 162 pushed 744 back together and shoved them on up to Ridgecrest only to dump the air when the head end was only about 10 car lengths from the Tunnel at the top.
After another 20-30 minutes they Finally got down the mountain to Old Fort. In the mean time westbound 165 is waiting in Old Fort  to meet 744 and local P87 who departed Asheville after 162 got back into the Yard.  Oh and 165 tells 744 they are long and hanging back out on the single track, but that's OK because 744 has to drop the retainers.  I don't think 165 realized how long they still were after dropping cars at Greenlee siding (This is a common practice now) as they were blocking a road east of Old Fort for more than an hour, maybe more.  It's a country roar but lots of trucks use it to get to plants on the east side of Old Fort.
744 finally go in and P87 go in behind 744 and 165 Finally got out of town, then 744 with the ERIE got out , BUT only to Connelly Springs (east of Morganton) where they are going to tye it down and PTI is going to pick them up.  (162 is still in the Yard)
Not a good day on the Railroad.
Did I lose anybody?
