CSX Derailment/Collision in Marysville, Ohio this afternoon. Investigation is still underway. Crew was injured and taken to the Hospital

Wow! Great shots......looks like that switch is the culprit...what went wrong will be up to the Investiagtors to determine.....

I wonder if all those emergency respnse personnel were looking up to see a little birdie buzzing around, and knowing they can't do a thing about it.

Thank you for the shots. Terrible outcome and I hope the crews recover quickly.

​ the switch isn't the culprit ... the idiot/s who left it open is/are the culprit/s ... reports have it the switching contractor has running rights over the secondary from side of their plant to the other ...

As discussed elsewhere - including another thread on this discussion forum - it could be vandalism, it could be a switch failure, or it could be somebody's failure to restore the switch to proper position after use. But how the switch ended up the way it was is an obvious focal point for investigation.

Because checking a switch is hard to do...

Because a wayside switch indicator is hard to install (the line has them at the Honda switch)...

PTC is a federal mandate that tries to prevent human error...trouble is, humans always will error...even with PTC.

Funny how the railroad balks at adding a target to the switch. We got some big pentagon targets in the yard and asked if they would put them on a few north facing switches as we are directional on the main. No way. Costs too much. Instead, the local leaves a switch open and a loaded coal train smacks a standing cut of loaded covered hoppers near track speed. Both crew injured, one bad.
My math says the signs were cheaper and easier to see at distance. Might have lessened the damage.
Local ran through their own switch again. Same crew.
We have zones now with rail integrity announcements. And they balked about wiring in the switches even after above wreck happened.

Questions:   Did the 2nd unit roll as a result of taking the siding too fast?  Perhaps the saved further kaos further down the siding.  Speed of the train on the main track?  

This is a terrific use of drone.   Thanks for sharing those.

I doubt it.  Notice the lead locomotive hit a standing (presumably) car or cut of cars.  I'm sure that's when things went all over the place.

Look at all the pix for a couple of minutes before forming an opinion!
​Then, the train went in the yard at speed instead of going down the main.
The lead unit went halfway through a loaded covered hopper, which was the first in a standing cut of cars.
​All of the jacknifing and rollovers are the result of the fairly high speed (40 MPH?) collision on curves...
