West Slope from the Back of Amtrak 42

Hello All:

I made a trip out to Altoona and environs via Amtrak last week. It was a good time. Ill have more to post later from the trip. But thought I would share some pics from the rear of Amtrak 42 from Pittsburgh to Horseshoe. Was surprised to see a number of Position Lights still left as well as some ex NYC type signals too.

Dave,

Great shots showing the physical plant.  On the Cassandra
shot, can clearly see the "pots" that once supported the
westbound signals.

Great photos, especially of the signals.  The first photo is very interesting, as the cantilever signal bridge has the same span of tracks as the modern bridges, but it has far less construction associated with it.  It's surprising that the long arm is braced by such a skinny diagonal arm, but it works.

The last cantilver shown, the new one at Horseshoe Curve, has the longest reach I've ever seen on one of these "single tower" models.

Ditto on that.  And you got the bonus of riding over the mountain on track 1 which only happens occasionally at least from my observations.

It was up front this time. Normally like on the Illinois Zephyr its on the rear.

east bound its up front. going west it will be on the rear.... thats normal for 42/43 on the Pittsburgh line. great photos
