There is a little back story about CSX #5554 / C&O #8272 round about trip from the Cumberland, MD deadline to Huntington, WV.....

Act #1.... Q315-21 departs Cumberland, MD with the #5554 dead in tow. Stopping in Keyser, WV to pick up a dead SD50 affords the opportunity to catch a couple of photos of it in front of the yard office there under the lights... 21 October 2016

Act #2.... Power move X789-23 finds the #5554 returning eastbound from Grafton, WV along with the dead SD from Friday night... so far the B30-7 has gone west out of Cumberland, MD to Grafton, WV and now is returning east back to Cumberland, MD - 24 October 2016

Act #3 ..... 01 November 2016, Intell from Cumberland tells us that the #5554 is now on train Q317-01 coming west out of Cumberland. We photograph the B30-7 at 21st. Bridge, Rd, MD going west again.

We chase the train into Keyser, WV and while the 317 is setting off some cars we notice the "Notes from Home" in the cab windows.. Guess Cumberland wasn't taking any chances of the #5554 returning again... This would be the last time we would see the #5554 until now, repainted as C&O 8272.... 01 Nov. 2016

Interesting series of shots. Amazing how what most of us would have considered "junk" in the past several years would now be considered a priceless treasure having been repainted.

Of note, 8272 has disappeared from public view again, so I assume it's in the shop again getting the finishing touches before heading out. There's also a pair of sandblasted units in the same spot, one is a GP38-3 and the other is unmarked (but rumored to be 4617/7534, but no official confirmation yet)

And what was on the 'notes from home' paper ??
