Amtrak on the former Erie

NS - Amtrak 099 westbound on the former Erie at Binghamton, NY to Elmira - CAF to pickup new built dinning cars. Return trip planned for Tuesday the 25th. Train is crossing the Chenango River

Is the other the bridge the Lackawanna's ?

If the train is heading to Elmira from Binghamton, it's westbound, not eastbound.

The other bridge is the former DL&W mainline. Then train is on what was the pre-merger Erie.

Yes, other bridge is the Lackawanna.

The size of the flood wall is a reminder of the damage the river can do, and has done.

NY has built a lot of flood protection along the former Erie route over the years.

The remaining DL&W track, to my observation, remains between Johnson City and Binghamton as a train-length parking place.

It gives them the flexibility of sending a train heading to the former DL&W/East Binghamton yard down the "track 3" or the former Lackawanna westbound main. Thus, if there is a train working the former Erie yard, one waiting to go up the D&H, both or any other obstruction on the former Erie, track 3 can keep things moving. As a result, it has survived the EL, CR and NS mergers.

Yes, Binghamton has some impressive flood walls, like over by BD. I remember looking at them and the level of the Susquehanna and wondering why they were needed. I think it was in both June 2006 and August 2011 that the water reached the top of the flood walls.

The remaining track on the DL&W bridge is called the Johnson Running track by NS. This un-signaled running track extends from CP-Johnson (formerly known as West BD in the EL days) in the west to CP-BD in the east. The Johnson Runner is regularly used by all four Southern Tier manifests 309/310 and 36T/37T when the 22K/23K or 28N/287 trains are trains occupying the ex-Erie mains (eg, re-crews, NS/NYS&W switching the Middle yard or at QD) as well as for NS-NYSW interchange. The so-called DLW4 track (formerly DL&W main track 2) that connects between the Kilmer switch and BD is the train parking track for large cuts of frac sand headed to NYSW (including occasional unit trains). When they operate, Providence-bound Ethanol unit trains and Bow coal trains have also been known to park on DLW4.

It looks like the old DL&W main is still in place as far as Old Vestal Road in Vestal. Not sure when a train last went that far - or even over the Susquehanna River bridge.

NS had been supplying National Pipe with plastic pellets off the Vestal spur at Vestal but Pipe relocated to Endicott on the NS main and now receives several cars of pellets each week.
