NS Line Through Mooresville, NC
Author: dozerman

What NS Line runs through Mooresville, NC.  Is this the line NS 212 runs north on from Atlanta.  Also, how many trains on this line.  Where would be the best place and most scenic places for picture taking.

Thanks In advance

This is the line from Winston-Salem to Charlotte. It's a secondary line. The main line is about 20 miles east of Mooresville.

And as far as I know, there is still a trestle out of service in Winston-Salem... meaning that no through-train can operate Charlotte/Mooresville/Barber Jct/Winston-Salem.

From Mooresville being a starting point, which way would I head to go to get some decent photo spots, north south, trestles, etc.

Also about how many trains in daylight

Train symbols?

Thanks

The line through Mooresville is the O Line which runs from Charlotte to Mooresville. On the north side of Mooresville this becomes the L Line and runs north to Winston-Salem. This line sees local traffic only. Charlotte yard job PC06 known as "The Quartermaster Job" normally leaves Charlotte mid to late morning and works north as far as the north side of Huntersville. Two local jobs are based north of Mooresville at Barber where the L Line crosses the S Line between Salisbury and Asheville on a diamond. The P23 departs Barber mid morning and works south to Mooresville. The P25 departs Barber mid morning and works north to Clemmons. Any of these trains are subject to lawing out away from their terminals and being taxied out to their trains the next morning. Most of the activity on the line is Monday through Friday, with P25 sometimes working on Saturday.

To see activity on the line, head to either Charlotte or Barber in the morning and listen out on the radio for these trains to get their track authorities. Listen to 160.950, 160.245 and 160.830, and be particularly alert to any communications from the "Raleigh Dispatcher." All of this trackage is easy to follow, and the trains operate very slowly. The line passes through a few interesting downtown areas on the south end and mostly through rural farmland to the north.

As mentioned in an earlier response, there is a bridge on the south side of Winston-Salem that has been out of service for 15+ years which prohibits through movements into Winston-Salem. There is also a section of the line between MP O 20 and O 28 that sees no regular activity, with the infrequent geometry train being the only activity. The O Line mileposts count up from Charlotte, and the L Line mileposts count up from Winston-Salem. If you get bored with the slow pace of the locals, head east about 10-20 miles for mainline activity on the former Southern line from Charlotte to Greensboro.
