Did EHH Quit?
Author: funnelfan

Interesting rumor going around. Supposedly Hunter Harrison was given a ultimatum to get the railroad in order in 90 days or hit the road, so he quit on the spot instead! This is the hopes and dreams of a lot of people in the industry (and a number of CSX customers), so I'm not sure if this is wishful thinking or true.

I highly doubt it. He would lose out on a lot of money if he quit and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would walk away from that much cash.

Who would fire him? The board which just hired him and OK'd the deal?

There's a difference in quitting and getting fired, just saying, also when you consider getting the RR back to or better than it was will cost a chunk of change too !

When I asked CSX a few weeks ago, I was told that EHH has a 4-year contract.

That really doesn't mean much. There is likely an out clause where he would have to pay a penalty for quitting early.

If this was true (I have no clue right now), the question is how much does the next CEO bring back? I think trying to bring back everything would be a mistake. If that was the approach, I expect CSX stock would take it on the chin.

EVEN IF he did quit, you can be sure the lawyers will make sure he gets some kind of severance package.

He fired back at a shippers group's complaint today, so he's hardly gone.

Actually that was yesterday;
"Harrison responded on Wednesday to the shippers group, defending what he called the "transformational changes" implemented since he took over as CEO in March to boost productivity and the railroad's financial performance. "

Shippers will benefit from the new CSX operating plan, Harrison insists.

That would be, the ones that are left.

So maybe it should say "the shipper will benefit..." instead of shippers

Did anyone else notice the ad for Trains Mag. at the bottom right of the article that has a cover of Trains mag, partially covered by a book or special edition magazine titled "13 Biggest Blunders in Railroading". Coincidence..... Wonder if EHH is story #1?

No one in their right mind would try to make as many changes as fast as he has. It takes time to let things settle out from one yard or hump closing, let alone several at once. Plus all the other operational changes being made now. These "geniuses" always forget their employees are human beings, not pack animals. Railroaders are good at adapting and finding ways to make things work, but when they lose confidence in management, all the chaos just seems meaningless.

I don't think that he ever knew that (nor did the rest of the Frisco management).

I first heard this rumor the first time almost a week ago. So it's safe to say the quit on the spot is completely wrong. The 90 day thing? Who knows. 90 days would be shortly after the investor conference. So if there is a poor showing this fall then I could see investor outrage. They may have enjoyed the bump in price but will be pissed if it all goes away due to self inflicted issues.

I have a friend that works for CSX. He has sat in yards waiting to get out 1 to 2 hours or more and getting a lot of pay for all the 12 hour days. But, with the amount of traffic that IS moving he wonders if he will come to work one day and the gates will be locked.

The friend stated for a short while after EHH arrived a lot of employees thought things would get better quickly. Now they wonder if ever.

As to the question of did EHH quit, no and if he should, well he will have earned around $25,000, OR MORE, per hour. Wonder what the board of directors would do to avoid all the missals that would come their way?

Back to EHH, my opinion is he has changed to much to quick. CSX is not a linear railroad like IC, CN or CP. It appears its spaghetti route structure is closing in on him like a spider web. Could there be a black window in there somewhere????
