Vale export units thru Harrisburg
Author: sscannella

On my way home from work this fine Thanksgiving Eve in Harrisburg, I came across an 055 special with 7 export units for Vale in Brazil, seen here just east of the Harrisburg fuel pad, heading for the Lurgan Branch and points south....

Saw them sitting in Enola yard this morning on my way through to points west. Couldn’t get into a good position for any pictures.

Are these Tier 4? For export I'd think maybe not, but they appear to have the slanted radiators like the domestic T4's.

Thanks to sscannella's heads-up at Harrisburg last night, we sighted NS 055 south thru Bealeton, VA at 9 am this morning. After waiting for 12R at Remington, it proceeded south at ~9:30 am.

Designed for export, they do not meet USEPA Tier 4 standards.

Could these units be the last ones made in Eire?
EMD Brazil will produce SD80ACe's to Vale also.

63-inch gauge - that's 5-1/4 foot gauge!
Seems to not be narrow gauge -- or is it just me?

These units belongs to the broad gauge (1,600mm) system in the North.

Thanks, I didn't think export units had to. Would make sense for them to share carbodies with current U.S. units, which it appears they might.

These are ES58ACI models. There’s a number of them already on the roster at the EFC which is where they are going.

These units are going to Vale's unit at Carajas which is broad gauge.

Vale's other mainline is from Belo Horizonte to Vitoria, and is meter gauge. I wrote an article on it for Trains, October 2015. https://kalmbachhobbystore.com/product/trn151001

Dave, at this time EMD is producing more 20 SD70BB's to VLI. Some guys here commented that after this order, EMD will produce some SD80 to Vale, but noboby are sure about the quantity. I imagine it will be the same amount of GE ES58 on production in USA right now. Maybe 15 to 20 units.
