THANKS to all who have private messaged me with their concerns. Our family did notify the National Death Index of his passing when he expired; also mom was the next in line for his RR benefits. Again thanks to those that have taken the time to send me private messages via Trainorders.

Not too shabby, that would be like 94,000 a year in 2017 dollars. Date: 01/14/18 11:23 Re: Some NYC lineage...Sperry railcar and paychecks. Author: TAW BKLJ611 Wrote:

The highest paid B&OCT operator job was $125.10 per week at that time. TAW Date: 01/14/18 14:26 Re: Some NYC lineage...Sperry railcar and paychecks. Author: BRAtkinson TAW Wrote:

The highest paid B&OCT operator > job was $125.10 per week at that time. > > TAW In looking at those pay stubs again, I noticed that the physical pre-printed check number on the stub was also printed by the computer printer about 2/3 of the way down on the right, on top of some preprinted information. But only on the top two stubs, not all three. Having been a mainframe computer consultant for most of my career, I've written parts of multiple payroll systems and payroll check-printing at two of them. One of the things we HAD to do was to print what check number the computer 'thought' was being printed physically on the check itself as well as on the stub. The reason is the check register. If the computer 'thinks' it's printing on check number 12345 and it's really 12346, then the check register would be incorrect and cause the accounting department untold nightmares trying to balance the company checkbook. Perhaps that's what drove the NYC to start printing the check numbers on the check and stub. Way back when, there were 'alignment' fake-checks that were printed by the computer to ensure that the horizontal and vertical placement of the continuous form check stock was accurate, eg, put each item in 'the correct place'. Printers could be manually adjusted up and down and left and right to do this. Once the fake-checks printed with xxxxxx's are all aligned, then the fake stock gets removed and the 'real' check stock inserted in the same tractor-feed holes. Then, on the console, the number of the first check to be printed is entered, and the real checks get printed from there. I recall one night when the computer operator typed in the correct first number but put the 2nd check in the tractor feed. Fortunately, like all good operators, they'd print a 3-4 checks, stop the printer, and then verify that the preprinted numbers on the checks matched the computer printed numbers on the same check. Realizing his mistake, he cancelled that run of checks and started over, this time with the 'new' correct check number. It took a couple of phone calls the next morning to explain why the torn-in-half checks were at the top of the payroll check pile from the night before. |
