CUMBERLAND — CSX Transportation has eliminated 100 jobs at the Cumberland facility with impacted employees being notified Friday. "CSX has informed employees today that some positions in Cumberland are being eliminated as part of an ongoing company-wide review of operations to improve efficiency and safety and to better serve customers," said Chris Smith, CSX Corporate Communications. "CSX will continue to communicate directly with employees, customers and other affected stakeholders as these changes are implemented." Reductions are impacting second- and third-shift staff at the Cumberland locomotive shop where they repair locomotives. A total of 96 employees and four managers will be offered opportunities to move or be let go. About two-thirds of the locomotive shop employees are impacted. The facility's car shop and service center employees will not be affected. Date: 05/11/18 19:12 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: Englewood DTWilson Wrote:

Must all be graduates of Hunter Camp. Date: 05/11/18 19:21 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: JLinDE Sad, as is still the closing of Cumberland hump yard , one of the CSX's (before Conrail takeover) best yards. Where will these locos be maintained now, or will they be maintained to a lower level. Every day in my area there are one or two loco issues. The fix was to send them to Cumberland if the problems were to big for local personnel. And all major inspections went to Cumberland. it is already evident that CSX has stopped washing locos, but it has been a worse winter in the NE after several years of warmth. This is the dead EHH's policy; shippers do not care about clean locos. Any self respecting short line will tell you different. Of course short line shippers see their RR's locos nearby, whereas Big shippers do not. It is indicative of reduced maintenance. The track here is getting many mud-spots on the mainline.

All they are doing is deferring everything to make numbers look good. This is an area that doesn't need more bad news.

The subsequent post answered "Prisons and ATK". Sad. Note to DTWilson: Times-News is apparently in need of a photo of the locomotive shop! -Ted Date: 05/12/18 05:14 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: Lackawanna484 This is sad. With a lot stored older power, how much had business dropped off?

And it's not like their current photographer couldn't do a drive-by shot of the shops from the streets..... Tim Date: 05/12/18 12:22 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: tomstp With railroading as whole traffic up it is amazing that CST is not. Or maybe not amazing in view of their customer relations. Somebody at CSX should take a look at CN and CP and see what they are doing getting rid of some of EHH's bad ideas.
Date: 05/12/18 13:22 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: PRR_4859 It is amazing how NS has so many shops (and has turned the mechanical department into a profit center through Thoroughbred Mechanical Services) and CSXT continues to get rid of mechanical forces. The current CSXT management is benefiting from the prior management buying so many new locomotives. Eventually, they will need to be rebuilt and will need more attention as they get older. CSXT will not have the capacity to do this if they keep reducing the number of workers and shops.

I was looking at the number of locomotives in use. If there are fewer locomotives in use, and mostly newer ones, that means less work for the shop crews. Going from a 92 day check for older units to a 184 day check for new will cut out a huge amount of routine work. ETA changed to 184, thanks for the correction Posted from Android Edited 1 time(s). Try it on your own car and see what happens.

It used to be many cars were junkers at 75,000 miles. Tires were shot at 20,000 miles, etc. Posted from Android Date: 05/13/18 07:21 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: ns1000 Lackawanna484 Wrote:

Think about how many miles these locos rack up in just a year..??!! Date: 05/13/18 11:44 Re: CSX eliminates 100 employees at Cumberland facility Author: jc76 Might be able too... coal is up in Appalachia ...... Coal is booming in places like Buchanan County.... head to the Buchanan branch and watch 6 Big Black motors fight the grades of Raitt Mountain ....... Weller Yard is again filled with cars for Tidewater......

Metro East, Relco , NRE are all benefiting from BNSF locomotive repair policy. Topeka can’t do repairs/overhauls and do any rebuild programs . All while that large shop at West Burlington sits empty.
