NS SD80MAC Questions
Author: PRR_4859

Good Evening:

I have not seen any Norfolk Southern SD80MAC units in the Jarrisburg area recently. Have they been working on other parts of the system? Perhaps I have just missed them. For a while it seemed like I could not drive by Enola without seeing one.

Thank you in advance.

It's just the natural flow of power. They had been on a lot of Port Road trains, and one went west on 17G last night

Thank you. I was not sure if they were placed in some sort of captive service. I like seeing them on trains. Do they still have the electronic handbrake or did NS update them?

It seems like NS has had good reliability with these units, more so than CSXT did. I heard they were very unreliable while in use under CSXT ownership.

Thank you again.

They basically roam all over the system now.

I was in the Cresson/Altoona area for three days (Aug 3-5).
I saw the 7221 (ex CSX) on a 591 hopper train on 8/3.
Saw 7212 on a different hopper train 8/3
Then on 8/4 while at Cassandra saw a C47 local taking one car east to Altoona, bracketed by 9 80-Mac's (all from the group of 17 that were originally allocated to NS).  The C47 returned west to Cresson later that evening and the 9 units were serviced at the Cresson Engine House facility.

First photo is going away shot of C47 at Cassandra taken around 4:45 pm Saturday 8/4/18.  72xx locos (listed in numerical order, not as they appeared in the consist:
00, 01, 03, 05, 07, 09, 11, 13, 16.  An odd sighting.

Second is a night grab of the 7201 and 7209 sitting in the yard near the Cresson Engine House Saturday 8/4/18

Looks scary to me having that one flat in the middle of the locomotives.

I believe that most (but not all) of the ones that NS got originally from Conrail (7200-7216) are still kept running out of South Fork or other western Pa. coal work. The ones they got more recently from CSX seem more prone to running the system on other work but also have been seen on coal trains on occasion.

With AC power around now, they roam the system quite a bit.

There is only 3 in storage now.....7210 (had the bad cab fire), 7214, and 7215.
