W&LE Head-On Collision
Author: funnelfan

Just got sent these pics of a head-on collision on the W&LE in Akron, OH today. Major damage to the locomotives involved, but thankfully no injuries. No other details.

Thanks Ted, just deleted my duplicate post... Good to hear no injuries, as that looks pretty nasty...

Great to hear that there are no injuries.

Major bummer that a high-nose GP35 with Alco trucks has most likely turned its last wheel.

Does anyone know a preliminary cause??

Glad no one got hurt...

Happened in the Akron, Ohio area. Word mentioned of a remote job that got loose; we shall see what the investigation comes up with. Most importantly no injuries.

Scratch the 106 and the 304.
Sad.
Glad there were no "human" injuries.

Looks like the high nose protected the cab or it was the type of impact.

Thought they were AAR style trucks not Alco.

Correct, AAR style trucks. Everyone thinks they are Alco just because they are under the units.

Wasn't the #254 recently acquired by the W&LE?

Yes, former NS/SOU GP38-2 #5123, which was acquired via auction in August 2017 and put into service by the W&LE in March of this year.

Reports now say the three Geeps were part of a remote set that ran away and ran into a train waiting at the limits of the remote zone using the single SD40. Impact speed was a estimated 49mph.

Not sure where any idea of a tree unit train originated, but it was two trains with two units each. The train with the two geeps was the one operating in remote.

That's ugly. Good thing no injuries.

Sometimes an RCO crew fails to understand the relationship between weight/speed/operative brakes, and if the switching lead is on a grade, runaways can occur. Hopefully that was not the case here, but I have seen it happen where I work.

That's a great point.

Isn't the remote unit supposed to go into emergency if it leaves the control range of the belt pack?
