PRR E8s in Oak Island?
Author: Pattenburg

was looking at Heritage Units.com and saw that the PRR E8s were reported to be in Oak Island (NJ) at 12:07 PM on Thursday. The initial report for these two units had them at Emmaus, PA at 12:57 AM on Thursday morning. Is the Oak Island sighting incorrect?

Levin has announced that this event will be the last trips with the E-8's which will be put into storage after them as he is not willing to pay for the cost of installing PTC in them. Also reported by a Dan Kittay on Trains Magazine blog.

Would it not have made more sense for the developers of the PTC equipment (or more correctly for the railroads to demand)  to make it modular so you could basically plug it into any locomotive and be easily moved from one to another, at least after some basic prep work?  At various times there will be a LOT of locomotives, even on class ones that will not actually need PTC based on their work assignments, so wouldn't it be great to be able to just uplug it and install it in another unit as needed?

We would be right back where we used to be with locomotive radios fifteen years ago.  Never where you need them, returning from off-line stripped of them.  At least one Class I (CSX) actually put a notice out bascially stating that any crew boarding a locomotive and not finding a radio was to immediately contact RR police.

Who da man?

"He didn’t know who one of the Santas would be, but he took delight
in telling me one would be Ross Rowland, who provided the Bicentennial
Train that toured America in 1976. Rowland volunteered for the fun of it."

Very sorry to hear this may be the last run of the E8's...

Maybe someone can orgazine a "GO FUND ME"?  Just how much does
it cost to install PTC?

There's a video on the Railfans of NYSW Facebook page of the entire Toys for Tots train taken as it passed west through Port Jervis before midnight this morning on its way to Sparrowbush for a change from NS crew to NYSW crew for the trip over the ex-Erie Delaware Div (now Central New York). Should be on Starucca Viaduct at around 0300 and into Binghamton at about 0700. The train will deadhead back down this route on Sunday in daylight and there is buzz that there will be a photo shoot on Starucca Viaduct with the NS SD60Es removed to allow the PRR E8s to appear to be leading. So historically significant consist (RFK's funeral car) plus historically significant last mainline use of E8s (of course, who ever thought an E8 would appear on Starucca after EL scrapped their E8s?)....

Here's the link (but apologies ahead of time as I think it's a closed FB group): https://www.facebook.com/richard.j.bernardon/videos/10213250583127760/

Here's the consist:
NS SD60E 7030
NS SD60E 7014
JTCX E8A 5711 (PRR)
JTCX E8A 5809 (PRR)
Babbling Brook
2 Amtrak Baggage Cars
Pullman Car
Morristown and Erie Alexander Hamilton
Juniata Terminal Little Juniata Rivers
Juniata Terminal Warrior Ridge
Juniata Terminal Pennsylvania

TFT train just arrived Binghamton on the CNYK at 0605 - NS local crew K84 is at CP-BD to meet and greet NYSW crew and then shove the consist over to E Binghamton Yard to park it on track 17.

Just a guess, but the "Pullman Car" may be the Kitchi Gammi Club.

It's Webb Rail's ex-UP "Pacific Union" sleeper.

It's happened since the EL days. I was visiting the East Coast in October 1986 and happened to catch the Conrail OCS with 4022 eastbound on Starucca one morning (and chased it all the way to Waldwick NJ).

And Jimmy Wilson's Erie E8 #833 moved his NY&GL train over the line to attend Railfest at Steamtown, circa 2008.

Forgot about the Conrail E’s! As I understand things, Bennett’s 2 ex-PRR E units were 2 of the 3 Conrail OCS E8s. We’re they trailing 4022 on that OCS trip?

Cost for the Levins probably isn't the issue. ;-)

Probably has more to do with having to plop antenna arrays on the roofs of those classic streamliners.
