Friday I made yet another trip to one of my favorite shortlines, The Nittany and Bald Eagle. Just like every other time they arrived into Tyrone around 930am and left before 11am. I focused on chasing them east as the NBER GP8 #1603 was leading. This was the last NBER engine I needed to see to complete their roster. Leading the train into town was LVRR GP20 #9050. I always enjoy chasing this railroad even though they move every bit of 40mph once east of Tyrone. Enjoy!!

A couple noteworthy locations are: The street running section in Tyrone, an overlook near Unionville and the train passing under old CPL signals at Milesburg

After leaving Tyrone there is 1 crossing and 2 overpasses to photograph them at. Then the tracks are behind trees for about 10 miles and then the tracks parallel Route 220 all the way to Milesburg

Thanks for posting these fine photos of my hometown area railroad.

Over the years the Bellefonte Railroad Historical Society has sponsored excursions on this line from Bellefonte to Tyrone and shorter excursions out of Bellefonte during the Fall and Santa Trains towards the end of the year.  Hopefully, these will continue to be operated.

Years ago, the Pennsylvania Railroad ran passenger trains up the branch to State College. I believe Fullington Stage Lines now offers the connection to Amtrak.

Looks like a  couple of good, healthy trains - that's good to see.

Nice pictures and story. Nitpicky to be sure but that is Old US 220 that the NBER runs along between Port Matilda and Milesburg.  I have always enjoyed the road between Tyrome and Milesburg.

Penn State Alum from many years ago

We were recently across the lake from the tracks past Bald Eagle State Park over the New Year's holiday. We only get out there once a year of so, and didn't really know much about their operations. Thanks for filling in some details and giving my Dad and I some interesting new spots to check out. And thanks for the great photos, too!

Regularly scheduled PRR passenger service on the Bald Eagle Branch lasted until 1950.  Only the Bellefonte Central had a line coming into State College and Penn State.  The last regularly scheduled Bellefonte Central train ran in 1946.  However, in 1964, the PRR did run a special for a University of Pittsburgh vs. Penn State football game which was the last passenger train run to State College.

Fullington and Greyhound both run bus service linking State College with Lewistown, but neither has a stop at Lewistown's Amtrak station and neither service is timed well to connect with the Pennsylvanian.
