Fastest Freight Train I Have Seen In Years!!
Author: cornerfieldhobby

Today I went up trackside in Mentor Ohio from 4PM to 6PM and in that 2 hour time span saw 10 trains. Well out of the 10 trains, I have to share 1 video and that's of Q560. This was CSX eastbound freight Q560 lead by UP ES44AC #7808 & UP SD70M trailing 2nd. So for me in person, it has been quite a few years since I exprienced this fast of a freight train in person.

The most important thing to remember when taking either a photo or a video is absolutely do not stand too close to the railroad tracks.  Your video is great and that train is really moving along, but please remember that at anytime something could happen to where cars could jump off the track and in a matter of seconds could crush you before you could be out of the way.  If you have ever witnessed any kind of a derailment, even at a much slower speed, those heavy rail cars will go in several directions and wipe out everything in their way.  Something to really think about.  If you must take a close up video, set up your camera on automatic, and move far away from the tracks.  A camera can always be replaced, a life cannot.  Safety First Always!!!

I agree with John, above.

The closeness to that speeding train... is scary because of flying loose car pieces...

From dragging steel banding... flying in the wind... it’ll take your head off. Chunks of brake shoes, flying wood... all could kill at that speed.

It’s not THAT unusual a video segment... so, set up the recording device and stand well back....

Please be more safe around speeding trains...

He doesn't look much closer than he'd be if he was sitting at a crossing.

It had a tailwind! Also, if that train has derailed, you would have been hamburger! I NEVER stand close to the rails because it is just not safe!

Doesn't seem any closer then a lot of pictures on this site but I don't see anyone complaining about those.

Exactly. I've stood on public grass that was closer to the tracks than this when several 50 MPH trains whizzed by.

Sure, the train could derail and you could be dead, but you could also be 30 feet away from a road and a random car decides to suddenly go off-roading and hits you as well...

Life has risks...

I recently read somewhere that NS was raising all their freight train speeds from 50 mph to 60 mph.  The reason is that Precision Railroad practices are combining intermodal and manifest trains and they felt it was better to standardize everything at that speed.

That's better than the C&O plan of the early 70s to reduce the speed of all trains to 40 mph for uniformity.

And there's nothing to complain about here either. It's just preaching for the sake of preaching.

Same goes for the constant pissing and moaning about trespassing. Look at some of the pictures posted on here by well known TO'ers then go on Google satellite and see exactly where people were standing when they took those pictures. It's quite enlightening. I wish I knew how to save those images and post some of them here. The hypocrisy is amazing.

Missouri Pacific tried that all trains max 40 mph and it created one hell of a locomotive shortage.  Most of the power was slugging it out on the road.    After couple of months they dropped it.

I would say he is a good 45 feet away.....plenty of distance in my book.....If you have ever been at a station on the BNSF Raceway coming west out of Chicago, Amtrak runs their trains on the outside tracks sometimes at 70 mph...people on the platform are standing just a few feet away, almost getting blown off their feet. I guess it's all relative to whatever you are accustomed to.

That was my first thought too . . normally I use a tripod unless I am away from the tracks and even then use a tripod for stability.
