CSX reliably is down to a single pair of daily manifest trains on the Cinci-Atlanta line via Corbin, plus whatever locals run. The manifests are basically long barrel locals. All other scheduled manifest, intermodal, and auromobile trains have been rerouted away, which is quite sad to those of us who live aliong this once bustling line. A steadily declining tonnage of coal still comes in to Corbin via the Cumberland Valley (CV) subdivision that leads into the coal fields. This coal, mtys, and some other bulk trains (ethanol, grain) get routed via the mainline as CSX sees fit.  However, such traffic is irregular. Due to the impending expiration of remaining coal contracts, CSX is rumored to have the CV on the disposal block. Also rumored is the removal of much of the Corbin yard in the next year or two. The massive diesel servicing center in Corbin, constructed in the mid-1980s, was closed several years ago. The other big coal branch, the Eastern Kentucky (EK) subdivision, which joins the main at Patio, KY, is essentially out of service on the west end. Few if any trains are reported to have have moved over it in the past two years. What coal remains leaves via the Deane connection and heads towards the former C&O Big Sandy line.
It's a sad comedown for a heavy duty, CTC dispatched mainline that easily could see 30+ trains daily during the 1990s.

What other railroads would be interested in acquiring the entire line?  Would CSX consider selling to another Class I carrier?

Without the coal, how much else is there? Then you would need connections beyond Cartersville GA via CSX, though you could connect with NS at Knoxville and a few smaller places.

I wonder if a company such as R J Corman would be interested or whether it would be a bit too much to digest?

Would Canadian Pacific be interested in adding the Corbin line to their system?  It could be a logical extension to their intermodal lane that they are developing in Ohio.  CSX would have to add one of their north-south lines in Ohio and Indiana to allow the line to connect with the rest of the CP system to the north.
