I'm hoping that they'll repaint 1776 into a more patriotic (i.e. non-military) scheme for the sestercentennial in 2026 (something similar to SCL 1776 that SCL did several years in advance of 1976 bicentennial) and do another veterans unit using a number like 1945 (the year when US forces ended WWII) or 1783 (when US forces won the Revolutionary War).

I guess some railfans will never be satisfied! LOL.

I was chasing 1776 south of Waycross on a Mother’s Day and woman had stopped at a crossing with her husband to take pictures of it. She said she was a retired Navy Corpsman and she just happened to be driving by and noticed the paint scheme. She thought it was a very nice tribute to her military service. As a former Marine, I agreed with her. When non-railfans can appreciate a special paint job it seems like CSX did something right!

Speaking of 1776, anyone know if new or if renumbered, what the former # is?

I have nothing against the paint scheme on the CSX veterans unit, it is just that the number 1776 has little to do with the US military... and more to do with patriotic anniversaries and politics.

Contrary to popular belief - and likely not covered in history classes anymore - is that the American Revolution neither started nor ended in 1776.

The military conflict known as the American Revolution started in April 1775 and ended in Sept 1783 (and either 1775 or 1783 would have been a better number on a military themed unit, and 1776 better for a patriotic themed unit)

The US Army was founded in 1775...
The US Navy was founded in 1775...
The US Marines Corp was founded in 1775...

Given that, don't you think 1775 would have been a better number to use on a unit dedicated to US veterans?
