FEC train 292 through West Palm Beach, FL
Author: rbenko

Since moving down to West Palm Beach, FL six months ago and renting an apartment right by the FEC mainline, my favorite train has always been 292, a northbound loaded rock unit train.  It regularly trundles past my window between 9-10pm every Monday thru Friday, and at more unpredictable times during the weekend.  For the first couple of months I was here, it was normally led by two or more of FEC's standard cab motive power, usually a GP40-2/SD40-2 combination, and usually working pretty hard to maintain track speed.  Much to my dismay, around March they started using the omnipresent GE-LNG set, sometimes bolstered by a standard cab.  However, much to my delight, about three weeks ago they inexplicably went back to using standard cab power.

Now that the EMDs are back on 292, I've given myself the task to try and capture this train on video.  In the past I've nabbed it a few times from my apartment balcony, but the results are not really to my liking - not enough light on the train as it passes my building. So tonight I made the huge effort to shoot it trackside just down the road from "MH" Tower (aka City Place South Tower).  There's a decent amount of ambient light in this location to make a passable if not stellar video.  (BTW my apartment is on the corner of the building just out of the top of the frame).  The train is led by GP40-2 #425, one of two specially painted for Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness.

Hope you enjoy the results.  Thanks for viewing.

EDITED - from Andrew's note below, I believe the train is 292 - now I have to fix the video title!!!

Nice video!  But I believe that train may be 336, judging by the night run and all rock consist.  222 does have rock loads up front but it also has intermodal on the bottom.  292 is also a rock train but it usually runs though West Palm Beach in the evening while there’s still some light.

I think you're right that it's definitely NOT 222 - however, the schedule I have has 336 going through Ft. Lauderdale between 12:30-2:00am - I've seen it a couple of times passing through WPB sometime after 2am.  I'm thinking that this train is 292 - the schedule I have says it normally passes through Ft. Lauderdale around 8pm, which coincides fairly nicely with the time I usually see it here in WPB.  Like you mentioned, 222 must be the train I usually see around 8pm with a large cut of pea rock cars and intermodals.  I'll change the title to reflect what I believe is a better representation of the truth!

Very nice video.  A nice bonus was catching "Pink Lady" GP40-2 #425 on the point.

That looks like a very cool area to live in! It looks like one of your neighbors below you has a huge big screen T.V.
