Is that the main or the Shenandoah line? 

not much info yet, but , happened at 3 am, two cars in the river, and best of all..no one hurt. (from local tv station vo)

Probably empty grain cars. Last night empties were supposed to run to Brunswick.

          If they were loaded grain cars, that center one would be on the ground for sure.

How far ahead of the engines is the home signal allowing entrance onto track 2 at the tunnel?

Isn't the derailment on the Appalachian Trail walkway side of the bridge?

Looks like a stringline of empty cars on a curve.

Consider this scenario:  The eastbound CSX freight is returning from Winchester, VA with some empty grain hoppers at the head of the train.  The train is stopped for a red signal, awaiting clearance to the CSX main into Brunswick, just five miles away.  It's 2:30 in the morning and the crew is tired.

The engineer gets his green, but doesn't wait for the brakes to completely release on the rear of the relatively short train, before he begins to move out on the main.  A "stringline" is the immediate result.

I know ..... I know.  "Wait for the real investigation, before you shoot from the lip"!

It looks 1 bridge used to serve both mainline approaches, given the switch on the bridge to the line that seems to go downtown, towards the other mainline.  It looks like it's not connected to the other main, nor used anymore, but the tracks remain in place.  Interesting.

It looks like a great place to visit.

It was a total of 6 cars that derailed yesterday morning
