NS Train Derailment Alabama
Author: NSSpike

Sometime in the late afternoon on Friday NS 186 Birmingham, AL - Macon, GA had a derailment on the the Alabama East End District between Lincoln and Eastaboga Alabama around MP 749 +-. Not confirmed are the number of freight cars involved but around 20 has been rumored. As a rule this daily manifest tends to be a good size train with mid-train DPU applied. The crew is OK and somewhere around 5:45pm eastern was on the move with the remaining head end cars with a planned stop at the Anniston depot to pick up updated paperwork. Around 9:15 pm eastern train 186 was through Villa Rica Georgia and when asked reported to the dispatcher that their train length was 6100ft.

As of 10:15 pm Premium Service NS 226 Shreveport, LA (UP ZLCAI / KCS IZLCAI) - Atlanta, GA had a TA and was heading north out of Birmingham Al to Chattanooga TN via the North AGS district. As of 6am this morning 226 was north of Rome Georgia on the Georgia Division North Atlanta district. Have not heard what routing other Premium Service trains 225, 220 & 219 will be taking. Perhaps 219 & 225 west bounds may detour via the CSX Lineville Sub with east bound 220 taking the North AGS to Chattanooga.

As expected AMTK 20(3) after departing Birmingham Station eastward to Anniston was canceled. AMTK-19 (3) was through Bremen Georgia around 9:40 am this morning. NS 225 Atlanta, GA - Shreveport, LA (KCS / UP ZAILC) had gone west bound through Bremen Georgia around 8:45am which indicates that the line is expected to be open in the next few hours.

As I hear any related info I will update this post.

Amtrak mentioned passengers returned to New Orelans or their boarding  points.

Did #20, reverse and return or passengers by bus ?

Heard there is a rerouted NS 226 running as a CSX Z900-03 on the Lineville Sub and A&WP with a NS unit leading two UPs.

NS must have cleared, or is expected to clear, the derailment site as today's 20 shows out of New Orleans on time and 19(3) shows out of Atlanta 18 minutes late at 8:56 AM.

It seems unusual that the passengers on 20(3) were not bustitued.  Passengers out of Atlanta were out of luck, but passengers at Greensboro and probably Charlotte were switched to today's Carolinian, 80.

I assume the 226 rerouted via Lineville would have had to run around its train at Birmingham to reach the Lineville Subdivision.

NS seems to have a lot of trouble keeping its trains on the track recently. Too long, or too poorly put together in the yard? I have heard from Harrisburg folks that anyone (E or C) who criticises a yardmaster's assemblage gets fired; the YM is king!

19(3) made it through the derailment site today with some delay.  Shows out of Birmingham 2 hours 25 minutes late.

NS's problems are PSR, piss poor upper management, disregard for maintenance on track and rolling stock, employee morale in the dumper, greed and just plain old incompetence from top to bottom.

Well as a yardmaster I do like being all powerful but that's a load of crap. As a yardmaster I do try to be cognizant of train makeup. However, there are realities of things sometimes. Where I work we are expected to bleed, shift, set, and recrew trains with a single crew per shift. There just isnt the time or manpower to build a perfect train everytime. Just making it rules compliant sometimes is a challenge in itself. I defer any and all complaints to the trainmaster. If he wants it built differently he can tell me to do so.

Its not just limited to NS....

And derailments can happen anywhere.

You people need to stop blaming this type of stuff on what you have written in your post. Derailments happen, lets wait this out and find out what really happened on this derailment.

Certain fans appear to prefer the "Ready, FIRE, Aim" approach here when discussing all that is wrong with railroading. I wonder if they apply that same "logic" to their photographic endeavors too?

As mentioned in the thread on the Passenger board, Amtrak 20 went back to New Orleans, dropping off passengers where they had boarded.

I'm not a fan...I'm a railroader and I KNOW what derails trains....and when train makeup gets like it's been getting...and you are not allowed to critcize it, but it take it as is.....things will happen....but so long as I am instructed to go...the weight is off my shoulders and I am ALLOWED to snicker!

I know that YOU are a railroader, it's the armchair railroaders that I was aiming for.
