Ioving your WV series.  Thanks for sharing this.

I know you were probably on public property, but did anybody give you grief time for taking pictures?  Or any pleasant encounters with miners or locals?

I rode the West Virginia Local once out of Cumberland and we left with 6 F Units and 40 general business cars.  Soon we stopped at Wolf Run mine, and rear three units went into the mine for 100 loaded coal. When they came out of the mine the coupled on as mid train units and we took all that coal to Bayard where the mid train crew left us to take the coal up the power company branch to the Mt. Storm power plant.  That line had very steep grades and a number of horseshoe curves.  That 100 cars was a daily meal for that power plant.  That mountain is now covered with wind turbines but I doubt it matched the output of the coal burning plant.
We continued and served more customers after leaving Bayard and arrived at Elkins with 6 cars on our out law limit.  That Black Canyon line that had a 3.05% grade is now a trail from Thomas to Elkins.

Appalachian & Ohio RR, but the Sentinel trains typically use CSX power.

Neat story and experience, but the Wolf Run mine Tom photographed is on the old B&O south of Grafton.  The areas you are describing are on the old WM.

Thanks for clearing that up as I wondered if they were going to open Mt Storm power plant again and make some electricity with steam coal.
No such luck.
