CONRAIL to get PAS!

Info from R&P that CSX/NS will have CONRAIL take over PAS!  Nothing yet on PAR Ayer east.

Could be interesting.  CSAO seems to have worked remarkably well so far.

Trains newswire mentioned a few weeks ago that several legislators asked the state to purchase the line to North Adams in order to assure a passenger corridor continues to exist.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.  Lots of players potentially interested. If Conrail gets the B&M line, will its 50% owner CSX be competing with itself for Boston area traffic?

Why would Norfolk Southern give CSX access (via Conrail Shared Assets) on the Pan Am Southern?  Does anyone have an idea?  What would NS get in return?

Good questions Jimbo.  You'd think such an arrangement would give CSX the advantage with New England freight traffic.

Please elaborate on this if you can.

I had the same question.  It makes no sense to grant your competion access, unless your trying to keep a third competitor out.  I always believed that NS & CSX funded NYSW for that reason to keep say CN out of the norther NJ market.  Maybe same principle here.  Guess access would be from NEC another GW property.

Also avoids the possibility of a bidding war between the two....per "The Men Who Loved Trains."

Quite interesting if any of this is true. Michael McCellan (Jim McCellan's son) was reportedly on the OCS where they hashed this out.

Of course this is most likely just another wild railfan rumor. R&P isn't the most credible publication out there.

1.  Doesn't the ownership structure of Pan Am reduce the likelihood of a true "responsibilities to stockholders" type bidding war ?

2.  Is McClellan still VP of Strategic Planning ?  It's important to remember that that department is now in the Financial side -- where it should have been all along -- and is probably / hopefully less important than the newly created Financial Planning department.

3.  If there really were any strategic thinking at NS they would be looking at a Conrail Shared Assets ownership w/ CSX of the B&A*, which is, even by US standards, exceptionally underutilized, and not consider buying a capital-needy railroad for two trains each way per day operation.

SZ

*that is, of the main line trackage.  NS and CSX would each have their own terminal operations in Mass.
