interesting cars on Deshler cam
Author: mully

Just saw what I presume is a southbound on the cam that had some short flat cars with what looks like thick flat steel slabs. Is that correct? What are they used for ?

Thanks
Gary

Sounds like the "hot slab cars". Did they have heavy steel stakes on the sides holding the slabs in place?
If so they are hot slabs moving from the source mill that rolled them from blooms and placed them on the car without cooling them. When they arrive at a rolling mill they still have residual heat and require less heating before rolling.
They may appear to be cold slabs but they just aren't "glowing" in transit. If someone from the industry cares to provide more info or if I'm miss-informed let me know.
Thanks,
Go

As far as I know the source of the slabs is somewhere on Lake Erie, exactly where no. I've seen strings of empties come east in CSX freight and head north on the ex-C&O on the Fostoria Cam.
I've noticed two versions of these cars, what appear to be older ones and then a bunch that look newer and have heavier side stakes.

Slabs are destin for the AK Steel Mill at Middletown. They come from two sources, one is Detroit and the other is around New Castle, PA.

Most of what you see at Deshler move on Q509 and empty's return on Q508.  Detroit to Middletown. You know they are still hot when you see steam vapors in the air when rain hits the slabs.
