Road trip to upstate NY
Author: dschlegel

Last week my dad, brother and I took a road trip from eastern PA up to upstate NY. Day 1 took us first to Susquehanna, PA, Lanesboro, PA, up along the D&H and then over to Cooperstown, NY, and eventually Herkimer, NY for the first two nights. Here's some photos from day 1.

First is the ex Erie station in Susquehanna

Second is an ex D&H caboose showing its Reading heritage at the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley

Third is a shot of the viaduct in Lanesboro taken from the ex D&H.

Day 2 was focused in the Utica area.

First was the famous street running on Schuyler Street (Thanks UT-1 for all of the tips)

Second is a passenger car next to Utica's beautiful station getting lifted onto a truck (anyone know where it's headed)?

Third is a MA&N set of MLW and Alco power getting ready to pull 78 cars north!

When we realized we had a chance to catch the MA&N we boogied up to Marcy, NY and barely made it in time to catch the locomotives pulling hard on jointed rail, the video surely doesn't do justice to the amazing sounds!

Day 3 started traveling west with a stop at the beautiful Rome, NY station, then along the railroad towards Rochester.
First shot it the floor in the Rome Station
Second is the throat of Dewitt yard
Third is an eastbound autorack at Fairport, NY with an SD40-2 trailing!

Wow,  that pedestrian bridge is still up yet at Dewitt  The last time I shot off of that was 2003.

We woke up to sunny skies on Day 4, which was also May 1 and Amtrak’s 50th birthday.

First shot is an eastbound Empire Service train at Fairport

Second is an overhead shot at some of the equipment at the Rochester and a Genessee Valey Railroad Museum (this place is amazing, and you can tell they are well organized and have a great group of volunteers).

Third is a of the empty tracks just north of Wellsboro, PA. When I was last here in 2017 this was loaded with sand hoppers for the fracking industry. On the highway side was a big for sale sign for the building and sand towers.

On Day 5 we headed home, down US 15 to Sunbury then PA 61 south.

First is an NS local running between the sidewalk and the street in Sunbury

Second shot is the line-up at the RBMN shops

Third is the NRFF headed north through West Leesport.

Finally I'll leave you with a video of Sunday's NRFF.

We an amazing trip and saw so much more than what these photos show (including snow squalls Friday night in Rochester)!!

I want to thank UT-1 again for the Utica area tips. The three of us agree we’ll do this trip again!

Thanks Thom! The weather was actually kind of crazy! We were bookended by sunny summer like days, but in between we experienced April rain and SNOW showers!! That didn’t dampen our fun though, in addition to the railroad sights we also explored a bit of the Erie Canal, the PA Grand Canyon, and hit some great little restaurants and microbreweries during our trek.

The railcar you saw is former Santa Fe dining car #1479.  It was part of an order from Budd that was delivered in 1937.  That leads me to believe that it may have been in the consist of the first streamlined Chiefs.  Don't know where it's headed.

Nice job, Dan, glad I could help! The former ATSF dining car is moving to Remsen, approximately 20 miles north of Utica, where it will join former Adirondack 25 on display at the Remsen Depot located along the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern.

That BCR two-tone green has held up really well over the years!
