Interesting Payloads on NS wb manifest at Elkhart
Author: JPB

At 1630 Tuesday afternoon 6/22/21, as captured from the Elkhart live cam, a wb NS freight arrived Elkhart with a CalMod (ie, CalTrain) Stadler KISS EMU cab unit and US Army GE 80-ton switcher riding flat cars at the head end. Apparently these off-the-shelf Stadler Rail KISS EMUs are assembled in Salt Lake City for shipment to Cal Train so I'm guessing this is a shell that arrived via ship on the East Coast? Anyone have more clarity as to why this unit showed up in Elkhart? Cal Train originally ordered 19 7-car sets of these double deck EMUs.

The GE 80 tonner appears to be US Army 1667 that had been used at Belle Mead General Depot in New Jersey and the Red River Army Depot in Texas according to various internet sources. Anyone have definitive info on this unit re: where it's coming from and where it's headed?

Update: I read on the NS D&H and Southern Tier FaceBook page that US Army 80 tonner 1667 was in-bound from Texas heading for new owner Newport & Narragansett Bay RR (https://trainsri.com/) excursion line operating out of Newport RI. If so, the 80-tonner should be departing east out of Elkhart in the near future. So that leaves the question re: where the Cal Train EMU is headed - perhaps CAF's climate room facility at Elmira NY for environment condition testing?

So these loads actually arrived on an eastbound train from Decatur. Thanks for that info!
