Sunny afternoon chase of CSX's Letterkenny,PA turn
Author: bigsavage

On 4/12/2022, after spending the cloudy morning with Maryland Midland, relocated to sunnier skies in Franklin Co.,PA.
Ultimate goal was to follow CSX' s tri-weekly turn to the Letterkenny Business Park/Army Depot, located on the former Western Maryland Rwy. Lurgan sub just north of Chambersburg, PA.
This turn leaves the former Hagerstown WM yard and enters the NS x-PRR  line on trackage rights as far north as CP Ship (Shippensburg, PA), where a reverse move is made onto the former Reading/WM connector track that connected with the WM at Lurgan tower.
It is then a 8-mile backup move to the interchange yard at Plainfield.

KH00 , as its known on NS, rolls east past Possum Hollow Rd and. Wenger's Feeds in the MT. Rock area south of Shippensburg.
Yes, that's a huge Benjamin Moore paint can in the first pic, a landmark to I-81 travelers.

Once at CP Ship, the connection for the short train is quickly made and the crew boards the shoving platform/caboose, shown here crossing Penn St. in Shippensburg.
This x-NS hack has been on this turn for about a year, naturally it has acquired some decoration.
The power today has a little history:
#2631 was a 1973 GP38-2 delivery to the L&N
#4313 was a rare GP39-2, delivered new to the RDG in 1974, after less than 18 months service, was resold to D&H at Conrail startup.

Thanks Bigsavage for a look at a seldom seen piece of railroad, the old Western Maryland up in the Letterkenny area.  There was a time when the Letterkenny Army Depot held special events for Arm Forces Day in May and they used to operate some passenger trains around the depot on their railroad of the base, back in the 1970's.  I wonder if anyone on here remembers those times?  Does anyone have any photos from those days?

Approaching Clearfield Rd. crossing, the crew bails off to throw fusees and flag the crossing. The ancient bell on the right hand signal was going "clank-clank", instead of "clang-clang".
The train is almost to its destination and has just passed Culbertson in the 3rd pic.

Returning to CP Ship with about double the train as they brought in, causing the GP's to work a little harder, seen here at Wagner Road, near Pinola, PA.

Back on NS rails, and racing the setting sun for Hagerstown, KH00 roars by Wenger's Feeds one more time.

You definitely scored on this chase !  I like seeing the ex-RDG GP39-2 back on the Lurgan.

Excellent coverage.

The shoving platform (CSXT 900077) is a former N&W class C-31 caboose (NW 518500), built by International Car (Kenton, OH) in 12/1968.

Anyone know the CSX symbol for this local? It used to be B708 until February of this year, when CSX made the critical change of redesignating all locals to "L".

L152 is the new symbol, Ted.
