These look sharp ! (Lake State)
Author: EL833

On my way to an event up at Sault Ste Marie, Michigan I paid a quick visit to the Lake State Railway in Saginaw, Michigan. A goal was to try and see their "new" former UP SD70M units. I only had a short time to devote to finding these that morning, but within 10 minutes of arriving at the crossing west of their offices horns were heard across the Saginaw River. The bridge was already down and in short order a train passed through the bridge- with the new 6432/6431 pair. They look sharp, still clean with their Metro East Industries (in E St Louis) applied paint job. They yarded the train and took the power to the service tracks. All photos in Saginaw, Michigan, 06-22-2022.
Edit to ask- what's the story with that "007" critter seen in the background of the last photo ?

Nice paint work, for sure.

I wonder why UP is selling SD-70M's, one of their most reliable class of engines?

You got lucky! Great series. I personally enjoy the short lines getting into the newer units.

They are not "selling" them, they are lease returns and since a great portion of "the most reliable" fleet is
stored it gives you some idea of the current opinion of the units.

How old are they?  Missing some of the latest fuel economy gizmos?

UP started ordering in 2000 and the last were delivered in 2005 and most have been stored for going on 2 years.
They don't have electronic injection and are not DPU capable plus the DC traction motors, so they are sort of a
modern old locomotive.

Nice looking paint job. Maybe the critter is a shop switcher?
