NS departures from Norfolk, VA
Author: Gerrypaul

As I understand the following: #22A to Louisville, #233 to Chicago, & #227 to Harrisburg. Those are three regular departures from Norfolk ( correct?). Are there others?

Does anyone know currently accurate typical departure times of any/all of these trains from Norfolk?

The #227 does a pick-up of manifest in Crewe before heading on to Harrisburg? I think that's right...or does it depart Norfolk with the manifest?

All of these leave moving south, then do that loop-around at Weldon, NC to head up toward D.C., right?

Any info on any of this is appreciated!

You're mixing the NS and CSX routes west from Norfolk. NS takes the old N&W mainline, which goes through Petersburg and Lyncbburg en-route to Roanoke. CSX trains from Norfolk take the former SAL to Weldon, then move onto the ex-ACL "A-line" to continue.

For my own clarification, does CSX have any operations in Norfolk proper?  I have always considered them as serving the Hampton Roads area from Portsmouth.  Is that correct?

And CSX doesn’t really go to Norfolk.

The “Portsmouth Sub” runs Portsmouth, VA to Weldon, NC.

A pair of locals run this route, as well as I135, I136, and some grain/ethanol.

Mike, absolutely correct. CSX does not serve Norfolk proper.

Like a lot of places on the system, the Norfolk District quite often has crew and locomotive shortages.  Trains are rarely on time and are often annulled and / or combined.  So take the following schedules with a grain of salt.

The following are the scheduled outbound road trains and their profiled departure times (in order of departure)
22A Norfolk - Louisville daily 04:00.
29G Norfolk - Sandusky daily 14:00.
233 Norfolk - Chicago Landers daily 21:30.
227 Norfolk - Enola daily 23:00.  Departs Norfolk with a manifest block.

The following are the scheduled inbound road trains and their profiled arrival times (in order of arrival)
23G Louisville - Norfolk daily 09:30.
228 Enola - Norfolk daily 12:15.  Arrives in Norfolk with a manifest block.
234 Chicago Landers - Norfolk daily 15:40.
21N Detroit Livernois - Norfolk daily 15:50.

There are a couple of local turns that run in and out of Norfolk
V07 Norfolk - Suffolk daily turn.  Profiled Norfolk departure at 14:00 and arrival at 00:15.
V13 Petersburg - Norfolk Mo-Fr turn.  Profiled Norfolk arrival at 02:15 and departure at 04:15.

There are also about 3-4 coal trains a day in and out of Lamberts Point.  Two outbound empty trains are often combined.  Unit grain trains also make a sporadic appearance.  Unit trains can show up any time of the day or night.

Andrew (florida581) ...... You continue to be a wealth of useful information.  NS 227 to Enola, PA:  Where does it turn north to Manassas; Lynchburg or Roanoke?  Does  the same hold true for NS 228 south?

Also, what NS manifest comes east from Roanoke to Lynchburg.on the former N&W..before turning north to Manassas on the former Southern and then going west on the B-Line?..

Both 227 and 228 make the turn at Lynchburg.

18M and 19M (Elkhart - Crewe pair) are the only manifests that run between Roanoke and Lynchburg, but those continue east to and from Crewe.  11Z / 12Z (to / from Enola) and 304 / 305 (to / from Shenandoah) run north out of Roanoke on the ex-N&W Roanoke District.  12R / 13R (Enola - Linwood / Columbia pair) are the only manifests that run north out of Lynchburg on the ex-SOU, as well as the Lynchburg - Alexandria locals K95 / K99.

304/305? Those would seem to be new trains...

That's good news for H line fans s it would get the line back to 3 train scheduled pairs of trains running much of the line with some of the best scenery.

I assume they are trying to reduce the amount of work the 11Z/12Z have to do enroute? Are these running on any kind of a schedule? Running Daily?

Yes 304/305 were adding bc of the traffic on 11z/12 I will also mention that 201/202 will get routed differently soon along with a new symbol and 227/228 will have new symbols also
